A city map with a detailed graphic depicting the location of Antony Gormleys Broken Column statues in Stavanger Norway has recently received acclaim in a new book of maps from around the world. The book ”Cartography Design Annual” launched this year has a selection of some of the best maps published throughout the year of 2007.
Having spent the better part of the last ten years as a freelance cartographer in Stavanger, Kevin Paul Scarrott the person behind the Broken Column map is thrilled that his work has been recognised in this manner. His creative cartography for the Stavanger region has been assisting visitors and travellers to the area since 1998.
This recognition has arrived at a special time, Stavanger 2008 City of Culture ‘Open Port’ is in full swing along with his own ten year celebration of mapmaking for the region.
Kevin’s maps have been printed in English, Norwegian, German and Spanish, and can also be found on the World Wide Web where the Stavanger City map is available in thirty different languages. In the city there are fifteen large scale maps on stands, strategically located around downtown Stavanger.
All the maps that are designed by Kevin for Region Stavanger BA (Official Tourist Authorities) are non-commercial. The sole purpose of these maps is to guide and assist visitors in the best way possible without any extraneous and distracting advertising. A highly visual map content depicts museums and city attractions along with community facilities and transportation. The maps also include a comprehensive legend.
